And the real Arnold was killed decades earlier by Dolores, his very first creation. All those disparate story threads are wedded together by the same theme loss. Its grief for her daughter that shook Maeve out of her loop in the first place, setting the stage for the revolution she plans to mount in next weeks episode. In her current overclocked state, Maeve could simply reprogram her would be allies into doing her biddingbut shes savvy enough to know that, on an even playing field, seduction is always more effective than force. It starts with Bernard, who Maeve instantly recognizes as a host when he walks in to inspect her. Maeve freezes Bernard so she can deliver her big speech uninterrupted, but otherwise opts against using the old tricks of her creators to force Bernard into being her puppet. It worksand once shes back in the park, Maeve successfully woos Hector to her side by showing him that the safe he is programmed to steal over and over again has been empty all along. Were seeing a version of the same arc in both Dolores and Williama host and a guest who have jointly but independently begun to question everything they know about themselves. Dolores arc is deliberately obscured fleeing from Logan, her mind jumps schizophrenically between the past and the present as she finally reaches the church that ultimately represents the center of the maze. And as the episode ends, the Man in Black arrives to join her, setting the stage for the massive revelation weve been primed to expect all season. But while Westworld happily plays to the contingent of viewers who are in this for the fan theories, Im still convinced that the more interesting version of the show remains in the moral and philosophical underpinnings of the characters. I suspect its no accident that Maeve ultimately shares her belief in the importance of self discovery with her creator Dr. Ford, who spends the entire episode in the midst of an elaborate experiment designed to test Bernards limitations. Like so many of Westworlds characters, Bernards arc is built around the illusion of control. Every game is rigged, and every effort to leap off the board altogether is met with the revelation that he has simply landed on another board. In his efforts to achieve total recall, Bernard cleverly circumvents his inability to harm Dr. Ford by reprogramming Clementinenow decommissioned, and therefore unburdened by the normal rulesto point a gun at Dr. Fords head. Despite Bernards best efforts, Dr. Ford isnt actually in any danger always one step ahead, he designed a failsafe to protect himself from exactly this scenario. But he goes along with Bernards demands anyway, out of some toxic, paternal cocktail of generosity and curiosity and cruelty. Fords orders, Bernard attacked Elsie who may or may not be dead. Bernards tragic backstory was written by Dr. Ford, inspired by Arnolds belief that tragedies offered the best foundation for a host. And Bernard himself was created by Dr. Ford in Arnolds image, after the real Arnold was killedanother notably sentimental flourish for a man who publicly prides himself on his ruthlessness. These memories are designed to make us rethink everything we know about Bernardbut as each little revelation was parceled out, I couldnt stop thinking about Dr. Ford, and what this creation can tell us about his character. Think about how much time and effort it would have taken for Dr. Ford to rebuild his departed friend from the ground up. Imagine the countless hours fussing over the tone of his skin, or the gleam in his eye, or the wrinkles on his hands. Ford brings Bernard to life for the first time, he immediately corrects the robot on the way he cleans his eyeglasses, explaining that Arnold used the affectation as a moment to collect his thoughts. Ford was thoughtful enough to notice the gesture, and perceptive enough to intuit the deeper meaning behind it. This is intimacy in the deepest senseknowing a person so completely that you can reconstruct him after he is gone. And then, with all that in mind, imagine what it takes Dr. Ford to make him kill himself. The episode saves the grimmest revelation for last Bernardlike the hosts who live within Westworldhas been on a loop all along.
